BEST TIME TO VISIT TANZANIA FOR A SAFARI
The dry season from late June to October is the most reliable time for a Tanzania safari. Vegetation is thinner, animals gather around permanent water and game drives in Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater become easier and more rewarding. If the wildebeest migration is your priority, plan around the western Serengeti river crossings in July and August, then follow the herds north into the Mara ecosystem in September. Because this is peak season, lodges and camps in the Serengeti and on the crater rim sell out early, so booking six to twelve months in advance is advisable for the best choice of accommodation and guide.
The green season from November to March brings short afternoon rains, lush scenery and far fewer vehicles at the main viewpoints. January and February are ideal for seeing newborn wildebeest and zebra on the southern Serengeti plains, and the wet months are excellent for birdwatchers and photographers who prefer soft light and dramatic skies. Prices for camps and safari packages are usually lower outside the peak months, and many travellers enjoy the quiet roads and fresh landscapes. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended on remote tracks during this period, and a flexible itinerary helps you make the most of changing weather.
To choose the right package, start with the time you have available. Two and three day safaris work well for Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, while five to eight day itineraries add the Serengeti and allow a more relaxed pace with time for cultural visits and walking safaris.
