5-Day Iconic Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater Group Sharing Safari

Objective: Experience the legendary Serengeti and the prehistoric Ngorongoro Crater in an affordable, social, and professional group environment. Maximize your wildlife time in Tanzania’s two premier parks while sharing the costs and the excitement with a small group.

Overview

Your adventure begins and ends in the safari capital of Arusha. This 5-day sharing journey skips the "filler" and takes you straight to the legendary "endless plains" of the Serengeti and the prehistoric caldera of the Ngorongoro Crater. It is a high-intensity circuit designed for those who want to see the best of Tanzania without the private tour price tag.

By joining a shared group, you turn an elite wildlife experience into an affordable, social adventure. You will trade private road transfers for a shared 4x4 Land Cruiser, where the camaraderie of fellow travelers often becomes as memorable as the lions you track together. It is an ideal setup for solo travelers wanting company, couples maximizing their budget, or friends seeking an authentic African escape.

You will spend two nights in the heart of the Serengeti and two nights in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (or the nearby highland town of Karatu). This allows for maximum game-viewing time in the parks and minimum transit fatigue. You’ll be led by a professional Tanzanian guide who knows every hidden kopje where leopards nap and the best sunrise spots on the crater rim.

We offer two ways to immerse yourself in the wild: authentic budget camping for those who want to hear the hyenas from their tent, or shared budget lodges for those who prefer a solid roof and a warm bed. Whichever you choose, you are guaranteed professional organization, top-tier safety, and a front-row seat to the Big Five.

Detailed 5-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & Transit to the Central Serengeti: Your adventure begins with a morning pickup in Arusha. After meeting your group and guide, we journey across the Great Rift Valley, climbing the scenic Ngorongoro Highlands. The landscape shifts dramatically as we enter the Serengeti through the Naabi Hill Gate. You will spend the afternoon on your first game drive in the Seronera Valley, where the vastness of the plains and the sheer volume of wildlife create an immediate sense of wonder.

  • Highlights: Scenic drive through Maasai lands and first sightings of Serengeti big cats.

  • Transfer Time: 6–7 hours (including game viewing).

  • Accommodation: Central Serengeti Public Campsite or Budget Tented Camp.

  • Meal Plan: Lunch and Dinner.

Day 2: Full Day in Serengeti – Predator Tracking: Today is dedicated to exploring the Central Serengeti, a region world-renowned for its high density of leopards and lions. Because we spend a second night here, your guide can take you deeper into the bush to track specific prides or search for the "Great Migration" herds (depending on the season). You will enjoy a picnic lunch under an acacia tree, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the wild.

  • Highlights: Intensive tracking of leopards in the Seronera River valley and expansive plains views.

  • Transfer Time: Full-day game drives within the park.

  • Accommodation: Central Serengeti Public Campsite or Budget Tented Camp.

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Day 3: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Highlands – Scenic Transition: Enjoy a final sunrise game drive in the Serengeti, catching the animals at their most active. After a midday lunch, we begin our journey toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. We will stop at a spectacular viewpoint on the Crater rim to witness the 600-meter drop into the caldera before heading to our accommodation for the night. This transition from the hot savanna to the cool, misty highlands is one of the most beautiful drives in Tanzania.

  • Highlights: Sunrise wildlife viewing and panoramic sunset views over the Ngorongoro Crater.

  • Transfer Time: 3–4 hours.

  • Accommodation: Simba Public Campsite (Crater Rim) or Budget Lodge in Karatu.

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Day 4: Full Day Ngorongoro Crater – The "Big Five" Safari: We descend into the Crater floor at dawn for a full-day immersive experience. This intact caldera acts as a natural enclosure for nearly 30,000 animals. You will have the entire day to track the endangered black rhino, observe large elephant bulls, and watch hippos in the Magadi Lake. A second night in this area allows us to stay until the late afternoon, enjoying the Crater when most other day-trip crowds have departed.

  • Highlights: Rare black rhino sightings and a leisurely picnic lunch by the hippo pool.

  • Transfer Time: Full-day game drives within the Crater.

  • Accommodation: Simba Public Campsite or Budget Lodge in Karatu.

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Day 5: Karatu/Ngorongoro to Arusha – Final Farewells: After a relaxed breakfast overlooking the lush highlands, we begin our drive back toward Arusha. This is a great time to visit a local Maasai village or browse the colorful markets for souvenirs. We arrive in Arusha in the late afternoon for your drop-off at the hotel or transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your flight home, concluding an epic five-day journey.

  • Highlights: Optional cultural visit and scenic drive back to the safari capital.

  • Transfer Time: 3–4 hours.

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast and Lunch.

Best Time to Visit This 7-Day Tanzania Safari

  • Late June to October (Dry Season): This is the most popular time for this route. As water sources dry up elsewhere, wildlife gathers in massive numbers in the Seronera Valley and on the Crater floor. The weather is cool, dry, and perfect for long days in the field.

  • January to earlier March (Calving Season): A spectacular choice for those wanting to see the Great Migration herds in the Southern Serengeti. Thousands of calves are born daily, which naturally attracts high predator activity from lions and cheetahs.

  • November to May (Green Season): Ideal for travelers who prefer a more exclusive feel with fewer vehicles in the parks. The landscapes are vibrant and lush, offering the best light view for photography and incredible birdwatching opportunities for bird lover.

Logistics and Safari Tips

  • Starting Point: Most travelers fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). We provide a seamless transfer to your Arusha hotel to ensure you are rested for your morning departure.

  • Luggage: Since you are sharing a vehicle, space is a priority. Please use soft-sided duffel bags (max 15kg). Hard-shell suitcases are difficult to pack and may not fit in the luggage compartment.

  • Packing Essentials: Bring light layers. The Serengeti can be quite warm, but the Ngorongoro Crater rim is at a high altitude and gets very cold in the early mornings and late evenings.

  • Charging: Our vehicles are equipped with UK-style power sockets (Type G). We recommend bringing a portable power bank as a backup for your camera and phone.

From the first lion sighting to the final sunset, we take care of every detail so you can simply enjoy the ride.
