Itinerary
6-Day Rongai Route Package
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi/Arusha
Upon arrival in Moshi or Arusha, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. In the evening, meet your guides and fellow trekkers for an orientation session to review the itinerary, perform an equipment check, and finalize preparations for the climb. Enjoy a relaxing night as you get ready for the adventure ahead. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 2: Moshi/Arusha to Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
The day begins with a scenic drive to the Rongai Gate (1,950m/6,398 ft), where your trek officially starts. The trail winds through lush pine forests, offering opportunities to spot wildlife like monkeys and exotic birds. As you ascend, the landscape transitions to open moorlands with expansive views. After 6–7 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Simba Camp (2,600m/8,530 ft), your first campsite, where dinner will be served under the stars.
Day 3: Simba Camp to Kikelelwa Camp
Leaving Simba Camp, the trail takes you deeper into the moorlands. The gradual ascent offers breathtaking views of the surrounding terrain and Kibo Peak. The day’s trek, lasting 7–8 hours, brings you to Kikelelwa Camp (3,600m/11,810 ft), where you’ll enjoy a hearty meal and settle in for the night amidst rugged, beautiful landscapes.
Day 4: Kikelelwa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
The trail becomes steeper as you climb toward Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m/14,206 ft). The route takes you through alpine desert terrain, with unique rock formations and panoramic views of the peaks. After 5–6 hours of trekking, you’ll reach the dramatic cirque beneath Mawenzi Peak, where you’ll camp for the night. This is a great spot to rest and acclimatize.
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut
From Mawenzi Tarn, the trek continues across the barren "Saddle" that connects Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. The gradual climb to Kibo Hut (4,700m/15,420 ft) prepares you for the summit push. Upon arrival, you’ll have an early dinner and rest to conserve energy for the midnight ascent. This is your last stop before reaching the summit.
Day 6: Summit Night and Descent to Horombo Hut
Your summit attempt begins around midnight under the starlit sky. The climb to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341 ft), Africa’s highest point, is challenging but immensely rewarding. After celebrating your achievement at the summit, you’ll begin your descent to Kibo Hut for a short rest and then continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,205 ft) for the night. This day involves 10–14 hours of trekking, making it the most demanding yet fulfilling part of the journey.
Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
On the final day, you’ll descend through the lush rainforest to Marangu Gate (1,900m/6,230 ft). At the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and celebrate your achievement with your group. A vehicle will transfer you back to Moshi, where you can enjoy a hot shower and a comfortable night at the hotel or begin your onward journey.
