Detailed 8-Day Lemosho Route Itinerary – Kilimanjaro Climb (2025–2026)

The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and rewarding paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering excellent acclimatization opportunities and breathtaking landscapes. Below is a day-by-day breakdown of what you can expect during your 8-day adventure.

Day 0: Arrival in Moshi

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where our representative will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi town. In the evening, meet your professional mountain guides for a detailed briefing, gear check, and final preparations for the climb. Overnight stay at your hotel in Moshi.

Day 1: Londorossi Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m)

Your adventure begins with a drive to Londorossi Gate (2,100m) for registration and entry into Kilimanjaro National Park. After completing formalities, trek through the lush rainforest, home to colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and vibrant birdlife. The trail gradually climbs to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp, your first overnight stop on the mountain.

  • Hiking time: 3–4 hours

  • Distance: ~6 km

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa – Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)

Leaving the rainforest, the trail climbs steadily into the heather and moorland zone. You’ll cross ridges and valleys formed by ancient volcanic activity before entering the expansive Shira Plateau, one of the most beautiful landscapes on Kilimanjaro. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp in the afternoon.

  • Hiking time: 5–6 hours

  • Distance: ~8 km

Day 3: Shira 1 – Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)

Today’s hike is shorter and designed to support acclimatization. You’ll cross the wide-open Shira plains, with panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers and rugged peaks. Unique alpine flora thrives here, making this day both scenic and relaxing. Overnight at Shira 2 Camp.

  • Hiking time: 4–5 hours

  • Distance: ~7 km

Day 4: Shira 2 – Lava Tower (4,600m) – Barranco Camp (3,950m)

This is an important acclimatization day. You’ll ascend gradually to Lava Tower (4,600m), stopping for lunch and enjoying views of towering volcanic formations. From here, descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley, filled with giant senecio plants. This “climb high, sleep low” approach significantly improves acclimatization. Overnight at Barranco Camp.

  • Hiking time: 6–7 hours

  • Distance: ~10 km

Day 5: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,200m)

Start the day with the thrilling climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical rock face offering spectacular views. The trail continues across ridges and small valleys before reaching Karanga Camp. The relatively short trek allows time for rest and acclimatization.

  • Hiking time: 4–5 hours

  • Distance: ~5 km

Day 6: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,600m)

After breakfast, continue toward Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit attempt. The trail ascends through the stark alpine desert, with views of both Mawenzi Peak and the route ahead toward Uhuru. Arrive early for rest, dinner, and a short night of sleep before the midnight summit push.

  • Hiking time: 3–4 hours

  • Distance: ~4 km

Day 7: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)

The most challenging and rewarding day of your trek begins around midnight. Slowly ascend under a star-filled sky, reaching Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim at sunrise. Continue along the ridge to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrations and photos, descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight.

  • Hiking time: 12–14 hours

  • Distance: ~15 km

Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi

Descend through the enchanting rainforest, enjoying your last glimpses of Kilimanjaro’s ecosystems. Arrive at Mweka Gate (1,640m), where you’ll receive your summit certificate. A vehicle will transfer you back to Moshi for a well-deserved shower, relaxation, and a celebratory dinner. Overnight at your hotel.
