4-Day Maasai Mara & Ngorongoro Crater Safari

Overview

Your 4-day Masai Mara & Ngorongoro Crater safari begins from Nairobi, the vibrant heart of Kenya, and takes you across borders to the most iconic wildlife sanctuaries in East Africa.

This professionally managed expedition is designed for travelers who want to witness the best of two worlds in one seamless journey. You will spend two nights in the legendary Masai Mara National Reserve, world-renowned for its high predator density and the Great Migration, and one night on the breathtaking rim of the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. By crossing from Kenya into Tanzania, you experience the distinct beauty and diverse biodiversity that make this region the global capital of safari travel.

At Macpace Tours and Safaris, we specialize in the complex logistics of cross-border travel. From navigating the Namanga or Isebania borders to providing expert English-speaking guides in both countries, we ensure your transition is smooth and professional. You will travel in custom-built 4x4 safari vehicles, designed to handle the rugged savanna and provide the perfect platform for viewing the "Big Five." Whether you are tracking cheetahs on the Mara plains or searching for the rare black rhino in the Crater, this is a high-impact journey that captures the very soul of Africa.

Your 4-Day Cross-Border Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Masai Mara (Kenya)

Your journey begins with a morning pick-up in Nairobi. We head west through the scenic Great Rift Valley toward the Masai Mara National Reserve. After arriving at your lodge and enjoying a fresh lunch, we head out for an afternoon game drive to introduce you to these world-famous plains.

  • Highlights: Scenic Rift Valley views and your first encounter with the Mara’s famous big cats.

  • Wildlife Focus: Lions, cheetahs, and massive herds of plains game.

  • Transfer Time: Approximately 5–6 hours from Nairobi.

  • Accommodation: Luxury Tented Camp or Mid-range Lodge.

  • Meal Plan: Lunch and Dinner.

Day 2: Full Day in the Masai Mara

Spend a complete day exploring the vast, rolling grasslands of the Masai Mara. This is your chance to witness the raw power of nature. We will take a picnic lunch to enjoy under a lone acacia tree, allowing us to reach the further corners of the reserve near the Mara River.

  • Activities: Comprehensive morning and afternoon game drives.

  • Wildlife Focus: Tracking the "Big Five" and witnessing the Great Migration herds (seasonal).

  • Accommodation: Same lodge.

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Day 3: Crossing the Border to Ngorongoro (Tanzania)

After an early breakfast, we begin our cross-border journey. We travel from the Mara to the Namanga or Isebania border, where we complete customs and swap into a Tanzanian safari vehicle. We then proceed through the lush highlands to the Ngorongoro Crater rim.

  • Activities: Scenic cross-country transfer and border crossing logistics.

  • Highlights: Changing landscapes and views of the Tanzanian highlands.

  • Transfer Time: A full day of travel (approx. 7–9 hours) depending on border speed.

  • Accommodation: Lodge or Camp on the Crater Rim or in nearby Karatu.

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater Floor & Departure

We descend 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater at dawn. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a natural sanctuary for over 30,000 animals. After a 5–6 hour game drive and a picnic lunch near the hippo pool, we ascend the crater walls and begin our return journey.

  • Activities: Immersive crater floor game drive and transfer for departure.

  • Wildlife Focus: The Black Rhino, prides of lions, and massive bull elephants.

  • Transfer Time: 3–4 hours to Arusha/Kilimanjaro for your evening flight.

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast and Lunch.

Know Before You Go: Essential Tips

  • Border Logistics: You will require a valid passport and visas for both Kenya and Tanzania. We recommend applying for the East Africa Tourist Visa in advance to simplify the process.

  • Health Requirements: A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory when crossing between Kenya and Tanzania.

  • Luggage: Small aircraft are not used here, but we still recommend soft-sided bags to maximize space in the 4x4 vehicle.

  • What to Pack: Bring layers. The Masai Mara is warm, but the Ngorongoro Crater rim can be very cold at night and in the early morning.
